Scientists may have found the cause of the life-threatening pregnancy condition pre-eclampsia – using a gas that smells like rotten eggs.
Tests suggest giving hydrogen sulfide to pregnant women at risk of pre-eclampsia could prevent them developing the condition and protect the growth of their babies.
The chemical compound is produced naturally in the body, but levels appear to be lower in some women.
